What is acupuncture and what does it treat?
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient medicine that's been around for approximately 3000 years. Acupuncture uses ultra-fine needles inserted into the skin to stimulate nerves, release natural painkillers such as endorphins and norepinephrine, decrease inflammation, and increase blood flow. All of this helps your body balance and heal itself, versus masking your symptoms like pain pills do. Because we focus on the root of the problem, you will experience long-lasting results. Acupuncture will bring attention to the areas of your body that are not working efficiently so that your body can heal itself and work the way it was intended to.
“To Balance is to Heal. To Harmonize is to Regulate. The needle and herb can Harmonize and Heal any sickness.” - Huang Di Nei Jing

How many treatments will I need?
Acupuncture is an individualized medicine so the number of treatments will differ for each person. The number of treatments each person needs is based on what they're being treated for, how long the condition has been going on, and how quickly they respond to treatments. If we are working on a chronic condition, it will take more treatments than an acute condition. It's similar to the idea of working out - it's going to take more than one trip to the gym to get six-pack abs!
I always suggest committing to 6-10 treatments to get the most benefit. First we want to offer quick relief from the condition you're experiencing. Next we want to work on correcting the root of the problem and then we want to maintain the improvements we've made. Once you're back to feeling good, it's ideal to use acupuncture as preventative medicine so you stay healthy! In fact, many people notice so many other benefits from acupuncture in addition to their initial complaint that they want to continue with regular treatments.
Does it hurt?
It's important to find a licensed acupuncturist who is trained and skilled at needling. The ultra fine needles are inserted with a very gentle touch. Most of the time people don't even feel them. Many people find acupuncture so relaxing that they end up taking a nap while resting with the needles. We call this an acu-nap - the nap you take during a treatment when you're not fully asleep or awake. People often leave their treatment feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
